The Do’s and Don’ts of Product Application (Part I)

It's no secret that Korean women have some of the best, if not the best, skin in the world. While some may try to put down their immaculate complexions as a mere accident of good genes, Korean women do in fact work very hard to maintain their silky smooth skin. In Korean skin care, it's not unusual for women to apply 10 to 12 products morning and evening and combine them with eating a balanced diet specifically geared towards enhancing their skin. When it comes to Korean beauty, Korean women know that it’s the little things you do that makes or breaks your skin care routine.

Of course, we can't all slather on endless products a day or have specifically tailored diets. So, for the rest of us who simply can't invest that much just on skin care, what can we do? Thankfully, there are some very simple but effective ways to improve your skin care routine without spending thousands on high-end products and nutritionists.

Let's start by changing the way you apply products to your skin.

Here are some basic dos and don'ts of proper product application to help improve your skin care regimen. In this part I, we will show you the:

Do...!

 1. Use gentle upward strokes

Sometimes, it's easy to forget that underneath the skin on our face are muscles that need to be toned and worked out just like any other muscle in our body. Nice, toned facial muscles help prevent premature sagging and the development of fine lines and creases. Applying products using gentle upward strokes, pulling against gravity and the direction of fine lines, helps tone facial muscles and increase blood circulation for firmer and younger looking skin. Want help? Try our Swanicoco Germanium Facial Roller for a full (face) workout.

2. Apply products using your middle and ring finger

Another tip to remember is to always use the middle and ring finger when applying facial products. Why? The middle and ring finger are the weakest of the five fingers, ensuring the skin receives the least amount of pulling and stretching possible. The other fingers apply too much pressure on the skin causing unnecessary pulling that could encourage sagging and wrinkles.

This tip is particularly important when applying products around the eye area. Instead of using straight strokes, use your ring finger to gently dab and spread the product underneath your eyes and on the eyelids.

3. Use your fingertips to help product absorption

After hearing about the massive amount of skin care products Korean women use on their skin daily, I was led to wonder if our skin could really take all that and still absorb enough of each product for it to be effective. As it turns out, our skin can take more than you think! It can absorb up to 90% of the products we use when applied correctly. However, if you’re still a bit skeptical about your skin’s absorbency, there are ways to help your skin out using only your fingertips.

After thoroughly washing your hands, rub your fingertips together to generate a bit of heat. Then, gently pat your heated fingers on your face starting from the forehead down. Alternatively, you can give your face a light massage while also promoting absorption by tapping your fingertips alternately on your face as if you’re typing on a keyboard. Doing this helps boost blood circulation while also promoting product absorption!

Have you been following the Do's religiously? Or just sometimes, maybe? Stay tuned for the Don'ts, the skin sins you didn't know you have been committing...
